概要 | This study employs econometric methods to examine the theory of Creating Shared Value (CSV) as a potentially supportable management strategy, using data from companies listed in the S&P 500. The findings reveal no empirical evidence that supports the effective implementation and sustainability of CSV. The social contribution programs undertaken by these companies are often short-term and ad hoc, rather than sustained over time. Consequently, the analysis suggests that the long-term sustainability of CSR activities is not assured, and firms may face difficulties in achieving a virtuous cycle of both social and financial performance.
Alternatively, only a limited number of companies have successfully realized CSV, as frequently reported in the media. Many companies encounter significant challenges in achieving CSV, and it is plausible that they are engaging in CSR activities reluctantly, driven by external pressures from public opinion, the media, or investors who prioritize ESG criteria. Additionally, some companies may be conducting CSR activities using a portion of profits derived from their ethical business practices, fully aware that this may lead to a reduction in their overall profitability. As public opinion and media understanding of ESG deepen, and as investors increasingly support companies that pursue CSR initiatives—even at the expense of profitability—this evolving landscape may incentivize companies to adopt CSR practices as part of their corporate ethics, despite the potential for reduced financial returns. |
